Metaheuristic approach for designing robust traffic signal timings to effectively serve varying traffic demand

Traffic demands at intersections vary across various periods of a day and from to day. Generally, fixed time traffic signals are designed considering the average flows multiple days over predetermined interval. This approach overlooks variability in demand, leading inefficient unreliable signal control performance. A plan should be robust such that it is less sensitive demand variations can maintain near-optimal performance during varying demand. To address this need, paper presents new offline scenario-based framework, named Metaheuristic Robust Approach (MHRA), identifies for signals. MHRA includes heuristic considers optimum scenarios corresponding costs find solution. The numerical experiments performed using realistic on an arterial corridor verify framework. outcomes concluded framework produces outperforms nominal based maintains stable under Benchmarking with other approaches proposed literature as mean-variance optimization conditional value risk minimization confirms better efficiency MHRA.
